After cutting their teeth as a support act for the Jackson 5, the band achieved breakout success in the late '70s with a string of hit singles including "Easy," "Brick House," and "Three Times a Lady." Richie left the band in 1982 to release his self-titled solo debut, which topped the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and established Richie as a consummate balladeer with No. 1 hit "Truly." Four more No. 1s and several multi-platinum albums would follow in the '80s, including 1983's Can't Slow Down, which took home the Grammy for Album of the Year.
