The Festival in Auckland is also preceded this year by Animation NOW! (14-18 July), our annual showcase of animated shorts, now extracted from the main programme and made into an international animation festival in its own right. To mark the occasion, Victoria University Wellington, School of Design have donated a $5,000 jury award to go to the film judged best in the programme.
NZIFF is an annual event celebrating movies and movie-going by bringing the best and brightest of world cinema to the giant screens of New Zealand.
The full line-up for Auckland encompasses over 160 features and documentaries curated by a team of programmers who attend premier festivals in North America, Australia and Europe, as well as selecting from submissions received from around the world. World premieres of many New Zealand films will screen as well as New Zealand premiere screenings of every film shown.
NZIFF was founded on the principle of sharing box office income with filmmakers. It is one of the few opportunities around for many filmmakers to launch their works locally and earn back a few dollars in the process.
NZIFF encourages lively interactions between films, filmmakers and New Zealand audiences in 13 towns and cities around the country. NZIFF is run by a charitable trust, NZ Film Festival Trust, and is held annually, screening in Auckland from 20 July to 6 August in 2017.
